English Language Arts
Elementary English Language Arts (ELA) at Advance Prep Academy is taught by homeroom teachers and aligned with Florida’s B.E.S.T. ELA Standards. Instruction includes reading, writing, language mechanics, spelling, speaking, and listening. Students explore a wide range of literary genres while developing the skills to analyze and evaluate texts thoughtfully and critically. Differentiated reading groups provide targeted support, and phonics is taught systematically from Kindergarten through the early elementary grades. Vocabulary is introduced and reinforced in context, while fluency is built through both silent and oral reading. Writing instruction covers multiple styles and purposes, and handwriting develops progressively from precursive to cursive. Math
Kindergarten math is taught by the homeroom teacher using a hands-on, engaging approach aligned with Florida’s B.E.S.T. Mathematics Standards. Lessons incorporate manipulatives and real-world problem-solving to build critical thinking skills and promote mathematical fluency.
Key focus areas include counting from 0 to 100, basic addition and subtraction, identifying and describing shapes, and understanding concepts of length and weight.
Social Studies
Elementary social studies is taught by the homeroom teacher and follows the Florida Social Studies Standards. Instruction helps students build foundational knowledge in geography, economics, history, government, and civics. Students learn to analyze primary and secondary sources, explore diverse cultures, and understand significant events and contributions throughout history. Lessons are designed to promote critical thinking, civic awareness, and an appreciation for values such as freedom, equality, and personal responsibility.
In Kindergarten, focus areas include: U.S. landmarks, basic map skills, Native American and colonial life, families and community workers, Hispanic culture, farming, and American celebrations.
Science
All K–5 science instruction follows the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), preparing students for future learning through hands-on, inquiry-based experiences. Lessons are designed to help students explore and understand the world around them through observation, experimentation, and critical thinking. Science is taught by elementary science specialists once per week.
Kindergarten science focus areas include: the needs of animals and plants, forces and motion (pushes and pulls), and weather patterns.
Character Development/Study Skills
Students learn independence when arriving at school by hanging up their backpack, putting out individual supplies, moving quietly between activities, and taking responsibility for completing individual work. In addition, they learn how to work with others and problem solve.
Social Emotional Learning
Advance Prep Academy uses the QuaverReady program to support the social and emotional growth of students in grades K–2. Through interactive lessons, music, and engaging activities, students learn essential skills such as self-awareness, emotional regulation, empathy, decision-making, and positive relationship building.
